TAKE TIME TO VIEW HOMEWOOD'S AMAZING HAAS MURALS
By Carrie Steinweg published August 07, 2024
I’ve found myself in Homewood a few times in recent months for brunch or lunch and while traveling to my dining destination, I was reminded of the phenomenal collection of Richard Haas Murals that grace the sides of many buildings in and around downtown Homewood.
Mural installations have become quite the trend in recent years in municipalities, with graffiti art, angel or butterfly wings, historic depictions or striking floral images being painted on public roadways, buildings, fences, benches or other types of canvas. But Homewood was way ahead of the game. In the early 1980s, the first of Haas’s murals was unveiled and the renowned large-scale illusional muralist continued to paint his way around the village.
The Village of Homewood is fortunate to have the largest collection of Haas Murals anywhere in the world. Born in 1936, Haas began painting large-scale outdoor murals in the 1970s in New York. The Wisconsin native has done murals throughout the country as well as in Germany. You’ll spot his large-scale exterior work in such places as Massachusetts, Oregon, Ohio, Texas, Missouri and others on and in landmark buildings, libraries, courthouses, office buildings and other structures. He is know for his trompe-l’œil style, which gives a three-dimensional look. He’s also done interior installations in Florida, Kansas, Tennessee, Virginia and more. You’ll even find his stunning artwork at the Smithsonian Institution.
As you drive around Homewood you’ll find a total of 15 different scenes, from trains to a movie theatre to a classic 1950s diner. Click here to view a map of all the locations.
