On Stage in the Chicago Southland in March

As winter moves on, we’ve still got plenty of chilly, gray days to come in the Chicago Southland before the sunny, spring and summer months arrive. When the weather isn’t yet quite inviting enough for spending the day outside, you’ll find that the month of March is filled with musical performances to brighten those gloomy, sloshy days and get you tapping your toes. Here are a few musical events to mark on your calendar.
Message in a Bottle
March 1 - 3
Catch the end of the run of The Extraordinary Dance Show Message in a Bottle, based on the music of 17-time Grammy Award winning artist, Sting. See this artful expression of Sting’s music on March 1-3 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre as part of Broadway in Chicago.
The Romantics
March 3
Sit back and listen to the soothing sounds of Michael Finlay as he plays piano on Piano Concerto No. 2 by Rochmaninoff and works by Smetana and Sibelius in this one-night only performance at Trinity Christian College’s Ozinga Chapel Auditorium.
Celtic Song: Music from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales
March 3
The Moraine Valley Community College Concert Band, now in its 18th season, will present a musical collection of songs from some of the great composers of Great Britain and Ireland. This performance is free, but tickets are required.
Snap Crackle! Celebrating the Icons of Jazz Drumming
March 8
Get to the Dorothy Menker Theatre at Moraine Valley Community college for the performance of this 20-member big band swinging into the 26th season. They’ll play a wide range of big band styles, from soulful blues to swing to Latin jazz to gritty funk. Free admission, but tickets are required.
Hollywood Swinging - Tribute to Kool & The Gang
March 9
Freedom Hall will be hosting the ultimate tribute to super group Kool & The Gang - Hollywood Swinging. The group will bring nonstop hits of Kool & The Gang from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s.
Drum Tao
March 9
The high-energy group Drum Tao will showcase the ancient art of Japanese drumming, wadaiko drums and the beautiful melody of Japanese flutes and harps at Moraine Valley Community College. Combining highly physical, large-scale drumming with contemporary costumes, precise choreography & innovative visuals, Drum Tao creates an unforgettable production that transfixes audiences worldwide.
Pretty Woman: The Musical
March 12-17
See this hit Hollywood film that starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere - one of the most beloved romantic stories of all time - brought to life on stage at CIBC Theatre, full of musical numbers that will make you fall in love again.
Yesterday and Today: The Interactive Beatles Experience
March 22
The Fine & Performing Arts Center at Moraine Valley Community College will be the place to be if you are a fan of the Fab Four. Experience the nation’s most innovative and unique show utilizing the works of the Beatles. This amazing band creates an interactive experience, leaving the song choices completely in the hands of the audience.
Terisa Griffin - The Songbird of Soul
March 23
Known as the “Empress of Soul,” Terisa Griffin brings her own flair to the stage. Don’t miss this performance from this exciting entertainer, songwriter, actress, producer and philanthropist at Freedom Hall.
On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan
March 19-24
This inspiring true story will have audiences mesmerized. The CIBC Theatre will present this story about heart, heritage and two people who believed in their talent and each other to become an international sensation: Emilio and Gloria Estefan.
Hooley in the Park
March 22-24
This three-day celebration at Chicago Gaelic Park will feature a wide array of Irish musicians and vocalists along with Irish dance performances.
